The Hagioscope

On the north wall of the chancel, you will notice a small, narrow arched opening. This is described in Victorian accounts as a hagioscope or squint — an opening designed to allow worshippers in the aisle to see the elevation of the Host at the high altar. However, its size and position suggest it may in fact be the doorway to a former rood-loft stair, giving access to the rood screen which once separated the chancel from the nave before the Reformation.
Either way, it is a fascinating survival from the medieval life of the church, and a reminder of how differently worship was organised before the sixteenth century.
