The Chancel

Moving eastwards, you enter the chancel, the most sacred part of the church and the traditional location of the high altar.
The chancel contains some of the most important evidence of medieval worship in St Peter's. Although many changes have taken place since the Reformation, features such as the piscina and aumbry survive as reminders of how the church functioned before the sixteenth century.
Beneath the east window on the exterior of the building stands a medieval tomb traditionally associated with Robert, a member of the de Limesey family, who is said to have founded the church around the year 1100.
