The Roof and Clerestory

Before moving forward, look upwards.
The roof above you is largely the result of Victorian restoration work. In 1863 the earlier flat ceilings were removed, exposing the earlier roof structure and creating the higher roof and clerestory that can be seen today. These alterations brought additional light into the church while preserving many of the ancient oak timbers.
The church has required continual care throughout its history. Repairs following lightning damage in 1879 and major restoration campaigns in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries have helped preserve the building for future generations.
