Exterior Stonework

Completed 2015

Belfry stonework at St Peter’s Church, Grandborough

In 2015, significant works were carried out to repair stonework, belfry mullions and carved tracery heads.

The tower and spire have required periodic repair throughout their long history. Their exposed position, together with the weathering of the relatively soft historic stonework, makes careful conservation particularly important.

In 2012, the PCC launched a major project to address deterioration to the exterior of the tower and spire. With support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, other funders and donations from the local community, the project enabled specialist conservation work to be undertaken to safeguard this important part of the church.

The works included repairs to the tower and spire stonework, together with conservation of the belfry mullions and carved tracery heads. The project was completed in 2015, helping to preserve the medieval tower and its distinctive spire as both part of St Peter's historic fabric and one of the most familiar landmarks of the parish.

The carved work took longer than anticipated, and an additional £9,000 was needed to complete the project. A parish appeal was launched, and the response from parishioners enabled all the work to be finished to the highest standard.
